Abstract: The main reason for Lin Xiyi's (林希逸) annotation of Laozi lies in his belief that the previous annotations cannot comprehend the initial intention of Laozi because he does not understand the expression of "Jiewu mingdao”(借物明道) in this book. Taoism cannot learn the truth of Laozi for advocating it too much, and Confucianism cannot get it for denouncing it as heresy without making in depth exploration. From this, we can vaguely discover Lin Xiyi’s tolerant attitude towards Taoism. The purpose of Lin’s annotation is to interpret the initial intention of Laozi, and then demonstrate that Confucianism and Taoism are“not relellious”,so as to open up a way for absorbing the thought of Laozi and developing their Neo Confucianism. The unavailability of Laozi' s initial intention is closely related to the “no rebellious”of Confucianism and Taoism. The former is the premise for the latter to develop, and the latter is the destination and fundamental direction of the former.
