Laozi's Theory of“ Return to the Root and Restore life”and Daoist Philosophy of Life- An Interpretation Centered on Chapter 16 of Laozi
    Zhan Shichuang, Cheng Minhua
    2022(1): 1-13.
    Abstract ( 91 )   PDF (7076KB) ( 63 )
“Return to the root and restore life” is an important proposition about the methodology of human life maintenance proposed in Chapter 16 of Laozi, which has exerted a profound infuence on the construction of Daoist life philosophy since the Han Dynasty.“Return to the root”, this is not only for universe, but also for human life. From the Daoist point of view, the human body is a small world, and heaven and earth can be regarded as a large human body. Theoretically speaking, heaven, earth and human body are deeply rooted in the essence of Tajji (太極) , so‘return to the root and life” is to take Taiji as the hub, transform Yin and Yang.Guided by that thought, Daoist Health Culture and Daoist Inner Alchemy introduced the theory of numerals and symbols in the Book of Changes and gradually perfected the theory of life philosophy of the unity of man and nature, which still has an important practical meaning of physical and mental health.

    Jiang Menma, Qi Zhifeng
    2022(1): 14-34.
    Abstract ( 216 )   PDF (12658KB) ( 93 )
This article questions the authenticity of the historical records of Tao Hongjing' s Abandonment of Daoism for Buddhism from three aspects: Tao Hongjing's receiving Buddha's precepts, the reasons for him receiving Buddhism, and his Buddhist practice. By combing the records of Tao Hongjing in the current texts and unearthed documents, this paper holds that Tao Hongjing does not believe in Buddhism, receive precepts to serve Buddha, nor practice Buddhism and Daoism together.

Liu Yuanran and Shao Yizheng’s Reconstruct of Jing Ming Daoist Sect in Early Ming Dynasty
    Ye Wenxue
    2022(1): 35-54.
    Abstract ( 39 )   PDF (15138KB) ( 40 )
Through the prosperity of the Song and Yuan dynasties, to the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the Xishan W anshou Palace fell silent, and Jingming Sect of Daoism (淨明道) declined for a time until the middle and later period of the Ming Dynasty. However, since the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, with the sectarian characteristics of inheriting multi-schools of Daoism and legal pluralism, the Daoist school represented by Zhao Yizhen (趙宜真) , Liu Yuanran (劉淵然) and Shao Yizheng (邵以正) received the favor of the royal family, which has led to the excellent development of that and the revival of Jingming Daoist Sect. The legitimacy of the revival of Jingming Daoist Sect is still controversial though, the efforts made by Liu Yuanran and Shao Yizheng in the restructuring of Daoism not only led to the trapid development of Jingming Daoist Sect in the early Ming Dynasty, but also laid a solid foundation for its prosperity in the middle and later period of the Ming Dynasty.

Analysis on the Chapter of“Sanjue sanqi”in Laozi——And on the Research Methods of Laozi Silk Book I
    Ma Wenzeng
    2022(1): 55-66.
    Abstract ( 56 )   PDF (6966KB) ( 38 )
This paper re interprets and interprets“sanjue sanqi” (三絕三棄) through two versions of Laozi: the Ancient Chu Literatures Carved on Bamboo Slips Excavated at Guodian and the Silk Manuscript, and holds that the content of chapter‘sanjue sanqi”is directly related to chapter‘Baoxun” (《保訓》) in Tsinghua Bamboo Slips of the Watring States Petiod and “Wenzhuan” (《文傳》),“Wenxun” (《文儆》) in Yizhoushu (《逸周書》) . In this chapter, Lao Zi quotes King Wen's instructions to King Wu, taking the self-restraint of the monarch as an example to explain how to cultivate the mind. Through the comparison of words and meanings, this paper studies the relationship between the chapters of Laozi in the versions of Ancient Chu Literatures Carved on Bamboo Slips Excavated at Guodian, Silk Manuscript, the Han Dynasty Bamboo Slips of Peking University and Wang Bi (王弼) , and holds that the Ancient Chu Literatures Carved on Bamboo Slips Excavated at Guodian is the manuscript of Silk Manuscript Laozi, which is the origin of all later versions. The study of the Silk Manuscript Laozi should focus on the factors such as reason, historical facts, exegesis and grammar, especially make full use of newly unearthed documents, so as to gain a new understanding of Daoist thought, concept and knowledge system.

The Subject of Mind in Lin Xiyi' s Laoziyaozhai kouyi
    Wang Min
    2022(1): 67-78.
    Abstract ( 40 )   PDF (6868KB) ( 34 )
The contradiction between “jing" (敬) and “le” (樂) was already present in the Northern Song Dynasty, and became more pronounced in the Southern Song Dynasty. Lin Xiyi (林希逸) , in his book Laozi yanzhai kouyi (老子庸齋口義) , seems to reconcile this contradiction and highlight the subject of mind by using the Laozi's lack of attention to the mind. However, due to various constraints, the result of the reconciliation is not satisfactory. But in fact, it has provided valuable experience for later generations to deal with this contradiction effectively.

The Dialogue between Daoism and Catholicism in the Late Ming and Early Qing Dynasty and Its Significance
    Xu Ke
    2022(1): 98-111.
    Abstract ( 35 )   PDF (10520KB) ( 40 )
The coming of Catholic missionaries to China in the Ming and Qing Dynasties was a collision and communication between the Chinese and Western cultures. The dialogue between Daoism and Catholicism related to the role of Daoism in the encounter of Chinese and Western cultures, as well as the role of“the true spirit of Daoism”in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Catholic missionaries with the Jesuits as the main body, did not attach importance to and despise Daoism, refecting the situation of Daoism in the Ming and Qing Dynasties from one side. In addition, according to Daoisms lack of a clear attitude and response to Catholic missions in China, the“ true spirit of Daoismn” did not have an effect on Catholicism, and the malaise of Daoism in the Ming and Qing dynastics may have something to do with it. The study of the dialogue between Daoism and Catholicism in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties is of great historical and realistic significance to both sides.

Research on the Continuation and Changes of Sichuan Lord Belief in Yibin, Sichuan Since the Republic of China Era
    Wu Yanqiu, Zhang Junlong
    2022(1): 112-124.
    Abstract ( 39 )   PDF (8249KB) ( 54 )
Sichuan Lord belief is a kind of local belief which spreads outward with Ba Shu as the center. The academic research on Sichuan Lord mainly focused on the great aspects such as the origin of history and social culture, and the microcosm of the case of Sichuan Lord has yet to be paid. The study had shown that the reason why the Sichuan Lord in the Cuiping district of Sichuan, which was founded in the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty, can continue to this day is due to the multi- functional nature of the Sichuan Lord and the protection of the Quanzhen school of Daoism. The decline of the Sichuan Lord temple fair reflects the impact of social and economic factors. Through this case study, it can be seen that the survival of local beliefs is related to the basic principles such as the versatility of god's abilities and the ability to respond to the social environment.

    Abstract ( 39 )   PDF (6984KB) ( 43 )
Through the ages, many scholars have been interested in the study of Zhuangzi. The academic history of Zhuangzi studics can be seen as a shadow of the history of Chinese scholarship. In the light of historical records, this paper systematically combs and explores the previous representative achievements of classical Zhuangzi studies, and comprehensively shows the overall picture and the characteristics of the times of Chinese Zhuangzi studies in the long history. Unlike the characteristics of the times of metaphysics, Buddhism, Neo Confucianism and westernization in the past, since the 1980s, modern Zhuangzi studies have no longer been banned by political ideology. In recent years, philosophy of life has become a new research focus.
